I've come to the realization that we can indeed move to a single system that covers genre for all games based on the Japanese genre organization and three-letter codes:

ACT - Action
ADV - Adventure
ETC - Etcetera/Other ("その他") (Miscellaneous Software will work too) (the Saturn master list mixes this with TBL so that needs to be determined through box scans) (and this appears to be the real purpose of the icon we use for Educational, since その他 is what boxes with the rarely-used Educational icon show, unless someone ants to give me a counterexample?)
FTG - Fighting (this was introduced post-MD/GG/MCD/32X so IDK if we should add everything before as well)
PZL - Puzzle
RCG - Racing (DRV - Driving? not sure if any use this)
RPG - Role Playing
SHT, STG - Shooting (shoot-'em-up, FPS, etc.)
SLG - Simulation (also includes strategy and what appears to be all fishing games before 2000 or so)
SPT, SPG - Sports
TBL - Table

along with our additional Educational, Compilation, and Sample (possibly rename Demo Discs because there are three MD demo carts as well, and possibly more?)

Starting with Dreamcast, Sega also had AADV, ARPG, and SRPG which are combinations (ACT+ADV, ACT+RPG, SLG+RPG). What's best for those as well?

That would just leave us with needing to make a Table icon rip and do something for fighting to work with the schematic I had set up. - Scarred Sun 08:40, 8 October 2011 (CDT)
Note that there's two official icons for table - The best scans I could find. I think the "Family" one is older. -Black Squirrel 10:18, 8 October 2011 (CDT)
I'd have to ask how SMS Power got their icons; if worst comes to worst we can always just crop a great-quality scan of Japanese boxes for the two - Andlabs 12:54, 8 October 2011 (CDT)
