Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia is a 1994 software program developed by The Learning Company for the Mega-CD; it was only released in North America, both as a stand-alone product and as a pack-in with the X'eye.
CIE is, of course, an multimedia encyclopedia licensed from the Compton's series of print encyclopedias, sporting a comparatively impressive 34,000 subjects, 5,000 pictures, and 30 video articles from the American Library Association. It is part of a sizeable series that presumably started in 1989 and had a number of entries throughout the '90s; a possible relation between this Mega-CD product and the similarly titled 1992 CD-i product is unknown.
At least three different versions were released, two exclusively as pack-ins with the X'eye and one at retail. The initial X'eye release is dated 05/04/1994, which is significantly earlier than any of the other builds. The second X'eye release is dated 09/28/1994. It adds a series of slideshows which use photos from the encyclopedia's library with recorded explanations. It also greatly expands the number of articles in the database. The retail release, dated 10/03/1994, is almost identical to the 09/28/1994 build except for an updated set of credits and some changes to the CODEHOLE.BIN utility library.
