Until the PlayStation release of Contra: Legacy of War, PAL regions would never see a Contra game. Instead, Konami's efforts would be released in the region as Probotector, and Contra: Hard Corps is no exception.

Probotector games replace the human characters (or human-like characters) with robots. In this Mega Drive game, Ray and Sheena become CX-1 and CX-2, respectively.

The Japanese version breaks from the Contra formula by giving players a (short) life bar, while the Western versions have one-hit kills. In Probotector, CX-1 and CX-2 are the same sprite with different palettes, meaning there are only three unique characters in the game rather than four.
