amiibo (アミーボ) are a "toys-to-life" platform made by Nintendo that were first shown off at E3 2014. An amiibo can work on various Nintendo systems such as the Nintendo 3DS (with an adapter), the New Nintendo 3DS, the Wii U, and the Nintendo Switch.

amiibo can work on various games and in some unlock certain features/items/etc. The very first Sega related amiibo came in the form of Sonic the Hedgehog who was compatible with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and was released in 2015.
