Game Gear version
Alternative puyo
During the introduction sequence (after the Compile logo), press

+ START . This will make the game use an alternative set of puyo graphics, which appear to be scaled down versions of their arcade counterparts.
Human puyo
During the introduction sequence (after the Compile logo), press 
. A sound will confirm if entered correctly and all puyo in the game will appear as little stick figures.
