As the Sega logo fades in, press A B B A. A sound will confirm the correct entry.

Now in two player mode, have both players select their character then hold  START  on both control pads before the red versus screen fades in. A new menu will load with more options (being called different things between the NTSC-J/PAL and NTSC-U versions of the game).

Stage select

As the Sega logo fades in, press Up Right Down Left Up Right Down Left A B C. A new stage select screen will appear when starting the game.

For the NTSC-U version, the code is shorter, being just Left Right Left Right C B.

Unknown code

As the Sega logo fades in, press Up Up Up Up Up Down Down Down Down Down Left Right Left Right A. A sound will confirm the correct entry, but it is not known what this code actually does (if anything).
