Boss character contest

Like previous games in the series, a number of Mega Man 8's Robot Masters are created by fans through Capcom's boss character contest. For this contest, a template was given for three of the six bosses that would eventually receive the contest's "Dr. Wily Prize": one boss character with a sword (eventually becoming Sword Man), one with extendible arms (Clown Man), and one with two heads (Search Man). The other winning submissions were Frost Man, Grenade Man and Aqua Man. The remaining two characters, Tengu Man and Astro Man, were made by Capcom.[1]

Besides the six winners, some submissions are displayed in the game's credits and Bonus Mode, and additional participants are listed in the credits as receiving the "Dr. Light Prize". Some participants won physical prizes from the contest, such as a Mega Man-themed calculator. In total, the contest received a total of 110,000 submissions.[1]
