The Japanese version uses dithering in order to simulate the 3D courses, while in the West, all polygons are flat shaded. Arguably this means the Japanese version is able to convey more information to the player as more slopes are visible, however the dithering effect can make it difficult to spot far-off details. Both methods take around the same time to render so there is no significant performance increase by using flat shading.
