Wayne Gretzky message
If NHL 2K recognises the name of one of your custom players, it will assign a portrait. Create a custom player called "Wayne Gretzky" (who had recently retired) and you'll get a special "Thanks for the memories." message instead.
Play as Black Box team
When the Black Box logo appears during bootup and with a controller plugged into port D, press HOLD 
+
. You should hear "oooh Black Box baby!" and the Black Box team will be unlocked.
"Big head" mode
When the Black Box logo appears during bootup and with a controller plugged into port D, press HOLD + 
. You should hear "oooh Black Box baby!", and now all players will have big heads.
