Invincibility
When powering up the system, hold 
on the first control pad and 
on the second until the sword appears on the opening screen.
Now when starting a new game, you should be invincible.
Continue from where you last died
Normally selecting continue starts you back at the beginning of the current stage, however if both controllers hold 
while making the selection, you will respawn where you last died, similarly to losing a life.
