Astro Fighter is a scrolling shooter arcade game released by Data East in 1979. Though Data East distributed the game in Japan, overseas operations were handled by Gremlin/Sega (though the cabinets themselves only credit Gremlin).
It was notably the first shoot 'em up with multiple vertical scrolling levels with a boss battle at the end of each level. It was thus one of the first games Sega marketed with the Multi-Phase concept.[3] It became a major hit in North America, where it was the fourth highest-grossing arcade video game in 1980 (below Asteroids, Galaxian and Space Invaders).[4] Sega were not involved in the release of the 1981 sequel, Super Astro Fighter.
