*Hm. How do we credit the EN voice actress here? We've corrected the alias-like "Herself" credit to the JP voice actress, but we can't have a link to two people. Unless we.... Hm. Okay, so on a hard technical level this would require a Production credits section for the JP and US version, but I don't know if that's necessary. We also shouldn't do an "Uncredited" tag, because then we could say the same thing for the "alias"'d JP voice actress. So I'm thinking... this is one of the times we need to do one of those Production credits edits (like for when there's a genuine mistake and we need to correct whatever to point to the right person). Thing is, I'm not familiar enough with how to do those. So doesn't need to happen soon, but the "Ulala: Herself" voice acting credit also needs to somehow point to [[Apollo Smile]]. Which also brings up ANOTHER issue: Is there a priority here? Does the JP voice actress get the aliased link, with Apollo in a note? Or perhaps, for accuracy sake, they should BOTH be moved to the note and the "Herself" credit left plain text? In this case, I'm thinking the latter, but iunno, thoughts for the future.

*Per a quick glance at the "Ulala" wikipedia page, there's Ulala/''Space Channel 5'' cameos in Breaking Bad, "Nate is Late", the 2020 Sonic movie, League of Legends?, and some other stuff. Also that article's got some writing mistakes in places and lists product placement as "cameos" that Ulala the character made, so just use it as a rough direction to more solid information.

  • Lawsuit casetext here.
  • Per a quick glance at the "Ulala" wikipedia page, there's Ulala/Space Channel 5 cameos in Breaking Bad, "Nate is Late", the 2020 Sonic movie, League of Legends?, and some other stuff. Also that article's got some writing mistakes in places and lists product placement as "cameos" that Ulala the character made, so just use it as a rough direction to more solid information.
  • barely-kinda-related, but laughing a little at this Ulala article. I cannot believe this many people described her as "the sexiest video game character" and "irresistable." Look when Mizuguchi said he made Ulala "sexy", he doesn't mean sexual. She's got flair and pop and spunk, but a lot of her "sexuality" is heavily smoothed over in this very tame, 2000's era art design. She was designed to carry a strong "sexy" vibe, not to be literally arousing, if that distinction makes sense. Ofc this is just contemporary gaming press and they're def not using the right vocabulary, but dang watch your hyperbole guys. Her sexiness needs to be covered, but it needs to be covered appropriately, and ensuring to distinguish between a character designed to be "fun and sexy", and a character designed so some of the audience could - anyway. Just make sure it's covered well.

Apollo Smile

So it turns out Apollo Smile has way more connections to Space Channel 5 than I had realized. Lots of photos wearing a VERY similar outfit to Ulala's SC5 one, with a very similar small logo above her solarplex on a white top. She wears outfits like that a lot, but this one's VERY SC5. Also, did her little anime persona exist before this game? She's also got a comic book/series of comic books titled "Apollo Smile and the Dancing Spaceship" or something. From what I can tell it's nooooott officially-branded, but I can also imagine a situation where Sega saw her release it and were like "aw cool, cute, awesome" instead of "hey unlicensed, bad, takedown" etc. And she's a celebrity, she can get away with that stuff. But SC5's whole production feels very personal and genuine and looser than other projects, and this absolutely fits in just fine. ANYWAY, make sure to look into Apollo Smile thoroughly and determine exactly how many Sega-related things she's tied do. And also, how much of Ulala's inspiration came from Apollo - was she wearing that very SC5 outfit before or after the game? ALSO, did she do any work outside voice acting? Any mocap, basic design, or minor influence work? CartridgeCulture (talk) 20:57, 5 December 2021 (EST)
