The initial three versions of Mortal Kombat hide the blood behind a cheat code, and spend the opening of the game teasing its existence. On the Game Gear, the text is split into three separate screens. The later Mega-CD conversion has the blood turned on by default, so this screen is removed from that version. The Amiga version (which uses the same code base as the Mega Drive version) also has a code screen, typing 'vampire' on this screen will disable or enable blood. Like the Mega CD, the Amiga version defaults to blood enabled.
Choose your fighter
The 8-bit versions share a very basic fighter selection screen, and both drop Kano from the lineup. Despite having fewer colours to choose from, the Sonya, Liu Kang and Scorpion icons retain part of their backgrounds from the arcade, which are missing from the 16-bit versions.
