It was first mentioned in MSX-FAN 1988-04; page 115; as Monster Island[1] (モンスターアイランド) and was supposed to be released in the ROM cartridge format by Nihon Dexter. It was later changed to Monster Land (モンスターランド) in MSX-FAN 1988-05; page 115[2]; and to Wonder Boy II: Monster Land (ワンダーボーイⅡ モンスターランド) in MSX-FAN 1988-07; page 115[3]. On MSX-FAN 1990-03; page 131, a final price was revealed for the game, being ¥7,800[4].
The game's release date was postponed indefinitely in MSX-FAN 1993-02; page 106 (contains NSFW content)[5]; with a representative of Nihon Dexter commenting about manufacturing costs being the major hurdle on the game's release. No news about the MSX2 version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land were made afterwards.
