The Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Controller, released in 2000, is a special controller that can be hooked up to the Sega Dreamcast system. It is primarily used to recreate the arcade experience of DDR.
The DDR Controller is compatible with 2 Sega Dreamcast games:
- Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Mix Dreamcast Edition
- Dance Dance Revolution Club Version Dreamcast Edition
The controller comes in 2 varieties:
- One is a standard soft mat, which is most likely to be bundled with the game and has a tendency to move or shift during game play and wear out quite quickly.
- The other is a soft foam mat, a much more durable mat with foam inside to prevent the moving or shifting during game play. This type of mat is sold separately.
- There is a 3rd, Hard or Metal mat, that is identical to the ones found on the arcade machines, but at this time it is unknown if a Hard mat was made to be compatible to the Sega Dreamcast system.
The controller itself has 8 buttons:
- 4 Arrow Buttons: These simulate the Up, Down, Left and Right movements in the game and allows you to scroll through the games options.
- 1 X Button: This acts as the B Button on a normal Dreamcast Controller and cancels or goes back to previous options.
- 1 O Button: This acts as the A Button on a normal Dreamcast Controller and confirms or advances any options.
- 1 Start Button: This acts as the Start Button on a normal Dreamcast Controller, which of course starts the game.
- 1 Konami Button: This button allows the user/player access to a hidden options menu in the Music Select screen.
It is not known at this time if the Sega Dreamcast VMUs can be connected to the DDR Controller directly.
The normal Dreamcast Controller can be used in the games as to edit the step charts of any song in the games and can be used if the user/player has no DDR Controller (Note: It is highly not recommended to step on a normal Dreamcast Controller with your feet as this would cause severe damage to the controller and render the controller inoperable).
