Since 1997 there have been regular Sakura Taisen stage shows (サクラ大戦歌謡ショウ); live stage performances featuring the cast of the Sakura Taisen video game series. At their peak, shows were being performed twice a year; one "summer" (later "super") show in August, and a "new year's" performance in January. Smaller, sporadic performances have also occurred at different times of year. Show runs would usually span three or four days in one Japanese venue.
The stage shows are notable for starring the voice cast of the Sakura Taisen video games (as well as extended media, such as TV, films and radio shows). The series' voice actors were chosen with the stage shows partially in mind, so for example, Chisa Yokoyama who voices Sakura Shinguji, would dress up and perform as the character on-stage. However, like the video games, the characters themselves perform plays, e.g. Chisa Yokoyama plays Sakura Shinguji playing someone else.
The stage shows were regular fixtures for nearly a decade, with the final performances taking place in 2006. The concept was revived in 2017, however, this time featuring a male cast.
