Headcannon Inc. is an independent American video game development company founded by Sonic scene member Simon Thomley, most known for creating the first fan-developed Sonic the Hedgehog game - Sonic Mania.[2]

Company

In 2009, future Headcannon founder Simon Thomley was approached by Christian Whitehead and asked to aid in creating a pitch demo of the title by providing information gained and pseudo-code developed from reverse-engineering certain original Sonic gameplay elements, such as Sonic the Hedgehog CD's Special Stage, and the boss mechanics of EGG-HVC-001. Once development had officially started, Thomley would not develop for the series again until Sonic the Hedgehog (2013).

After Christian Whitehead officially collaborated with Sega to release Sonic the Hedgehog CD (2011), the programmer was granted a close relationship with the company and was able to discuss bringinging back programmer Simon Thomley into his next project as a co-developer. Thomley subsequently registered Headcannon as a legal business in November 2012 in preparation for the iOS and Android rerelease of Sonic the Hedgehog (2013) - the title became the first game developed under the Headcannon name. This was immediately followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2013) later that year.

The company is also known for its Headcannon Game Engine, a script-based multi-platform 2D game engine with corresponding development tools. The engine was one of Stealth's long-running development projects, and was known by the name "Engine02" before it was re-branded to reflect its high priority and its connection to Headcannon's future projects.

Headcannon was officially incorporated on October 1, 2021[3] in preparation for the studio's upcoming game Pier Pressure.
