Stage select
On the Konami screen press 
(5 each)

(4). The sound of Sparkster dying indicates the code has been entered successfully. Then on the title screen hold 
and press START . Works on the NTSC-J ROM only. The PAL ROM plays the death sound but has no stage select, and the NTSC-U ROM has neither[1].
Demo recorder
After playing the game for a short while, pause and press (7) . The "pause" text will become mirrored. Press reset to watch your demo.
Extra difficulties
On the Konami screen press (4) (4) (7) . The sound of Sparkster dying indicates the code has been entered successfully. "Very Hard" and "Crazy Hard" modes will be available from the options menu. To unlock "Very Hard" only, use (6) instead. Completing the game on lower difficulty settings also unlocks these modes. Works on NTSC-J[2] and PAL ROMs only.
Overcharged
Charging your jetpack for 30 seconds results in a small explosion and Sparkster being knocked back and stunned.
