Apollo Smile

From Sega Retro

To do

  • From what I can tell, Smile's voiced Ulala in (nearly?) every English game the character has appeared in, including all? of the Sega All Stars/Sega Racing/etc. HOWEVER, all of my sources can't confirm whether or not she actually physically came back into a Sega studio to record new lines, or they just used her existing voice clips. She's still credited either way, but it would be helpful. The first two SC5 games are verified, and I did see a source verifying she did return to the studio for Sega All-Stars stuff, but itd be nice to know about the very recent stuff like the Sonic Racing cameos or w/e.
  • For this and other similar articles: For people with multiple surname changes from marriage, do we have/should we create a priority system for space reasons? The way the summary is written now is accurate, but it's wordy, and we could probably just cut it down to "current name", "birth name", and "Apollo Smile". Which, in THIS case probably just means cutting out Paula Anne Scharf-Daily, which I've just done from the article. And it's ALSO not one of those things which is relevant to her Sega-history at all, so I can't really write it into the article naturally... I don't know. Thoughts for the future. • She mentions Ulala in her song "Sunshine Slayer", where there's a moment in which she says "Groovy like Ulala".
  • Her SC5-esque comic, and her trademark SC5-esque outfits.
  • History. Wikipedia's article isn't too bad, and there should be some stuff here maybe.
  • So it turns out Apollo Smile has way more connections to Space Channel 5 than I had realized. Lots of photos wearing a VERY similar outfit to Ulala's SC5 one, with a very similar small logo above her solarplex on a white top. She wears outfits like that a lot, but this one's VERY SC5. Also, did her little anime persona exist before this game? She's also got a comic book/series of comic books titled "Apollo Smile and the Dancing Spaceship" or something. From what I can tell it's nooooott officially-branded, but I can also imagine a situation where Sega saw her release it and were like "aw cool, cute, awesome" instead of "hey unlicensed, bad, takedown" etc. And she's a celebrity, she can get away with that stuff. But SC5's whole production feels very personal and genuine and looser than other projects, and this absolutely fits in just fine. ANYWAY, make sure to look into Apollo Smile thoroughly and determine exactly how many Sega-related things she's tied do. And also, how much of Ulala's inspiration came from Apollo - was she wearing that very SC5 outfit before or after the game? ALSO, did she do any work outside voice acting? Any mocap, basic design, or minor influence work?
  • Note to self, created the article, and it turns out she's got a TON of dance training. Like went to school as a professional choreographer. Now I haven't seen anything stating she contributed any choreography to SC5, and given that her recording work likely was through SoA, I doubt she was able to contribute much more than audio (and maaaaybe some very basic inspirations from her personality/outfits), BUT. She was/is an anime voice actress, and I can imagine a situation where she's been to Japan a bunch of times. Again, I reaaalllyyy doubt she was more than a voice actress (she/others would have written about it) but might be worth looking into/emailing her.
  • Also needs verification for her company. Again, much more likely she recorded through SoA/some Western studio but hey, maybe she got flown over.
