Story
Long ago in a distant land, an evil sorcerer named Gilbas tried to destroy the inhabitants of the land. A great warrior named Aganan defeated him and sealed him away in a tomb with three sacred objects. Now, Gilbas has returned, and a new warrior, named Danan, must defeat him.
Gameplay
The game is a side-scrolling action game with some RPG elements. Danan must explore four maze-like rounds filled with enemies and hidden items. Rounds contain vertical platforms that must be reached with ladders or by entering houses. At the end of each round, there is a boss fight, with dialogue progressing the plot. Rounds are timed, though Danan can extend the timer by finding Clock items.
Danan moves with and and kneels with . He attacks by stabbing his knife with and jumps with . He climbs ladders with and and enters doorways with . In one round, Danan swims using the D-Pad and .
Danan gains experience by defeating foes (or by collecting Star items). When he gains enough experience, he advances a level, which increases his hit points. He loses hit points when he takes damage from an enemy or a hazard. The game ends if he loses all of his hit points or if time runs out, but the player can collect Elixer items that restore his health upon taking fatal damage. Danan can enhance his attack by finding special knife items in the rounds. These knives are necessary to defeat some of the bosses.
Danan can summon animal friends to assist him. Danan can find Animal Tokens that he can spend to summon an animal. The player can select an animal friend by pausing the game with PAUSE , using or to highlight an animal, and pressing to use it (or pressing to exit the menu without using an animal). The player can also see Danan's current level and number of experience points from this menu, as well as the knife, amulet, and orb items that he possesses (which he acquires over the course of the game). The player cannot invoke the pause menu or use animal aid during boss fights.
