Comparison with After Burner
After Burner II is considered to be more of an upgrade to the original After Burner than a fully-fledged sequel. There are, however, a number of differences between the two.
The title screen and introduction was changed dramatically.
The player is told how many missiles they have from the very beginning of After Burner II. In the original 'After Burner, this is only made known once the plane is in the air.
After Burner II has more information in its HUD, not only to accommodate the new throttle meter, but to show how many enemy planes have been hit. By default, After Burner II also gives the player more missiles - 50 vs. 29. The initial set of enemies also have blue highlights in After Burner II rather than green.
