Magazines

From Sega Retro

Should we also include multiformat magazines which covered Sega? If so then I guess we'd only want to include pages which specifically covered Sega, so a gallery would probably be more appropriate than pdfs. Although that could get quite large for magazines which had extensive Sega related content over a long period of time. Thoughts?--Pirate Dragon (talk) 15:17, 6 January 2015 (CST)

PDFs would still be fine for partial magazine scans. Or you could use the ref template to link to scans on archive.org, which is what I'd be inclined to do myself. - Hivebrain (talk) 15:58, 6 January 2015 (CST)
As I'm planning to scan from magazines not available on archive.org I'll go down the PDF route.--Pirate Dragon (talk) 16:17, 6 January 2015 (CST)
If it's also covering NEC systems (aka TurboGrafx/PC Engine), a full PDF magazine scan might be better housed on Retro CDN. I've personally never been a big fan of "partial" scans where only select pages are uploaded - even if it's not strictly related to Sega Retro, I think it should be kept together for the wider preservation thing -Black Squirrel (talk) 05:18, 7 January 2015 (CST)
Although if you do go down the partial scan route, PDF unless it's only one page. And if there's a big gap (idk say page 20-25 was a preview of something, and 90-100 was a review of something else), I'd probably go with two separate PDFs. -Black Squirrel (talk) 07:24, 7 January 2015 (CST)
Firstly, what's Retro CDN? Googling brings up retrocdn.net wiki, but there's no explanation of what it's for. I'm a bit of a PC Engine fan (had an imported PC Engine GT back in the early 90s, currently own the original PC Engine CDROM2 briefcase setup), and would like to go through all my multiformat mags scanning the NEC content (that's a reasonably manageable project considering the coverage it received in the UK was far less than Sega and Nintendo). I'm also not a fan of partial scans, I scan and upload full ones when I can to oldgamemags, but it's incredibly tedious and time consuming with just an A4 scanner, having to scan each page twice, then stitching the two halves together, then editing the page. Doing that for 100+ pages can take several nights. I'm taking a break from that until I obtain an A3 scanner. --Pirate Dragon (talk) 14:44, 7 January 2015 (CST)
As I was going to go through Games-X to add the review page numbers that I didn't add a couple of years ago, I thought I might aswell scan them too (most are only one page or less). As the mag was mainly computer orientated, Sega coverage is generally only a handful of individual pages each issue spread throughout the magazine (NEC coverage even less, so I can do that at the same time for future use).--Pirate Dragon (talk) 14:44, 7 January 2015 (CST)
Retro CDN's our new Wikimedia Commons-esque thing (http://retrocdn.net/) - a way to share files between Sonic Retro (when it works) and Sega Retro so we're not uploading things more than once. But we're also getting another wiki at some stage that'll be covered - NEC Retro, for... NEC video game stuff. I've spent the last week moving files which are likely to be used on both Sega and NEC Retro to Retro CDN (e.g. third-party developer logos).
NEC Retro is interesting because the plan is to tackle the home computers as well, and there's virtually no English coverage of that stuff. -Black Squirrel (talk) 15:30, 7 January 2015 (CST)
That's quite a project, what with all the doujin stuff without traditional publishers (although maybe that's pretty well documented in Japanese). Still it would be great to have an English resource for all of that,so I look forward to contributing. I'll bear in mind uploading dual Sega/NEC files to Retro CDN, some LaserActive stuff I've come across in Famitsu would fall into that category.--Pirate Dragon (talk) 16:24, 7 January 2015 (CST)
Wow. What a plans))) In the end - how many retro's you've planned (asking because i cannot find resources like segaretro for other consoles or computers)? And little question - new magazine uploads for common users - here or somehow on retrocdn? And in the end - full multi-format magazines uploads - yes or no?
NEC Retro is the only one in the pipeline right now... and if it's anything like Sega Retro, it will take years to get it to a reasonable state.
Unofficial rule until somebody tells me otherwise:
Sega AND NEC related -> Retro CDN
Just Sega related -> Sega Retro
Just NEC related -> NEC Retro (when it arrives)

I've decided to put on hold partial magazine scans for now, and started scanning the early issues of Sega Power (which are A4 sized) instead. I can't upload them as they are too large, so if an admin can raise my upload file size I'll upload directly here. If not then they should pop up on oldgamemags, so an admin will have to download from there and upload themselves.--Pirate Dragon (talk) 09:40, 9 January 2015 (CST)
