Astro Warrior (アストロウォリアー) is an early Sega Master System game developed and published by Sega in 1986. It is a very basic vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up, in which the player pilots a spaceship and is tasked with destroying as many enemies and structures as possible. At the end of each galaxy, there is a boss.

Astro Warrior was never released as a stand-alone game in Europe (bar Portugal), instead being bundled on the same cartridge as Pit-Pot in Astro Warrior / Pit Pot. In North America, it was bundled with Hang-On in Hang-On / Astro Warrior. The game was also brought to arcades through Mega-Tech hardware.

The game was re-released in Brazil and Portugal as Sapo Xulé: S.O.S. Lagoa Poluída in 1996, based on Sapo Xulé, a popular 1980s toy from Brazil.

Story

The Devil Star Imperial Forces are invading the galaxy. The Allied Forces have entrusted their Warrior, aboard the Astro Raider, to attack the invasion force and destroy their mother ship.

Gameplay

The game is a top-down shooter, taking place through three stages with a boss at the end of each. Each stage has many different kinds of enemies that attack in various patterns. After all stages are completed, the game repeats at a higher difficulty. The Astro Raider can be moved in any direction with the D-Pad. It shoots with 1 or 2, which can be held for continuous fire, though it is faster to press the button repeatedly. Power-ups drop down the screen after shooting a certain number of targets on the ground.

The Astro Warrior is destroyed if it is hit by an enemy. If the Astro Warrior is destroyed, all power-ups are lost. The player starts with three lives, and if all are lost, the game is over. The player gains an extra life every 50,000 points.
