Super Monkey Ball/Bugs

From Sega Retro

Back to: Super Monkey Ball.

No music

When changing the sound setting in the options menu, if the player holds Left or Right for a few seconds, all music will stop playing. The only way to restore the music is to reset the console.

Not fixed in any version.

Skip stages

In stages with moving parts, when the timer runs out, the player's ball stops rolling on the exact frame time runs out, but moving parts will still move for one more frame. If the player exploits this to pass the goal right as the player gets a Time Over, the stage will reset, with its ID changing to the last stage of the current difficulty. Afterwards, clearing the stage will end the game as if the player had completed all the stages on the difficulty.

This happens because when the goal tape is broken, the game increments the level ID on each frame of the animation while "TIME OVER" is displayed, eventually reaching FFFF (or -1) which is the end of the difficulty level, yet at the same time the game still determines that the player has failed the stage[1], thus restarting the stage with the altered ID.

This bug also occurs in Super Monkey Ball 2 and Super Monkey Ball Deluxe.

Not fixed in any version.
