Start a new game and don't touch the controls. After timing out and losing all your lives, the game will revert to the title screen and start playing the rolling demos.
During one such demo, the game will pause itself. If you unpause Toki will die from a time over, but will respawn, fully controllable at the beginning of the stage. You will be playing on normal difficulty with three continues and three lives.
Given that it takes ten minutes for a level to time out, and many of the demos run flawlessly prior to the pause, it can take upwards of 40 minutes to occur (and even longer on the unoptimised PAL version).
