Zapping "Satsui" (ザッピング「殺意」, Zapping "Murderous Intent") is a Sega Mega LD full motion video interactive television drama developed by JP Multimedia Entertainment and published by Pioneer LDC. Released exclusively in Japan in August 1994, the game is an interactive German murder mystery film dubbed into Japanese, featuring the ability for viewers to choose two separate versions of the film seen from each of its two protagonists.
The term "zapping" refers to the act of quickly changing between television channels.
History
Originally a 1991 German made-for-television movie titled Murderous Decisions (Mörderische Entscheidung), the project was an experiment in interactive television by famed director Oliver Hirschbiegel, who wanted to "transform the destructive principle of zapping into a constructive method of interaction".[4][5]
Two different cuts of the movie were produced (one from each protagonists' perspective), and both were broadcast simultaneously on two different stations. Viewers were encouraged to switch between channels in order to produce their own movie. While critically praised, audiences were reportedly confused, and would lose track of the film's plot.[4][5]
Development
The Japanese localization and publishing of Zapping "Satsui" was a joint production of television companies Fuji TV and TBS.[6]
Release
Zapping "Satsui" was first released on VHS exclusively in Japan by publisher Amuse Soft Entertainment on May 20, 1994.[6] When brought to the LaserActive three months later, each of the two cuts occupied a separate side of the LaserDisc. [5]
