Clockwork Aquario, known as Tokeijikake no Aquario (時計じかけのアクワリオ) in Japan, is an action game developed by Westone and supposed to be released by Sega Enterprises, Ltd. in 1992 for the Arcade market, but it was cancelled after poor performance in its location test status. The game runs on the Sega System 18 board.
The game was released for once in almost 30 years by ININ Games for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in November 30, 2021 on both Europe plus Japan and December 14, 2021 for Americas. The game was released for Xbox One worldwide in December 6, 2023. A PC version was also announced to be sold in Steam on the same day as the Xbox One version, but it is yet to be released.
Strictly Limited Games made limited batches of Clockwork Aquario in physical media, including a release for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, albeit only in Europe. A limited batch of the game was also made for PlayStation 5 in February 2023, again, only in Europe.
History
Development
The game was originally called Ghost Hunter during development.
Legacy
In 2006, Westone Bit Enertainment (without the involvement of Sega) allowed D4 Enterprise to release the game's soundtrack in MP3 format[11] on Project EGG. As of June 2024, all tracks can still be purchased, with the price tags varying between ¥110 and ¥166 on various tracks.
Clockwork Aquario won a Guinness World Record by being the longest time between the start of a video game project and its release, at 28 years and 81 days.
While the game originally spotted a Sega logo in its title screen, it was removed from the ROMs in the final release for other platforms.
