The Joystick (ジョイスティック) SJ-200 was the standard issue controller for the SG-1000 (where one was hardwired into the console) and SC-3000. Designed before the advent of D-pads, the SJ-200 has a joystick and two independent buttons mounted on the sides of the unit. It is also compatible with non-Sega systems, which was advertised on some SJ-200 boxes.

A Pioneer branded model came bundled with the Pioneer TV Video Game Pack SD-G5, which uses an 8-pin mini-DIN connector instead of a DE-9 connector.

The SJ-200 is plagued with many problems; the joystick is unresponsive, the controller's lead is noticeably short and the build quality is low when compared to later controllers. Internally, the SJ-200 is fairly similar in build to a ColecoVision controller, as they both use the same type of inexpensive leaf switches for their joysticks. The SJ-200 also uses these leaf switches for its buttons.

Sega released the SJ-300 and SJ-300M during 1983 as larger alternatives to the SJ-200. A year later, Sega bundled the SG-1000 II with SJ-150 gamepads, which featured a D-pad instead of a joystick.
