Waterworld is a Sega Mega Drive action platform game developed by Ocean Software. Based on the 1995 film Waterworld, the game was originally intended for release on cartridge in late 1995,[1][2][3] but alongside a version for the Saturn[4][5] was shelved for unknown reasons. However, the game did eventually see an official release, broadcast via the Sega Channel in March 1996 as one of the system's more notable downloadable exclusives.

While similar in many respects to the Super NES version of Waterworld (which was released), the Mega Drive version is a faster paced game made by different developers (Data Design Interactive, as opposed to what is thought to have been an in-house team at Ocean Software).

History

Prerelease

The Mega Drive version was planned to be released on cartridge in both the United States, Europe and Australia (with Australia's OFLC rating it G8), with an initial release date set for September 1995.[1] This date was then pushed back to November 1995,[2][3] then again to January 1996,[4] with further delays pushing the date back to February 1996,[6] and finally all the way to May 1996[7] before having its physical release cancelled altogether.

Release

In March 1996, Waterworld would be broadcast over the Sega Channel as one of the system's more notable downloadable exclusives.

Legacy

At an unknown date, a copy of the game's ROM was discovered and released onto the internet. As Waterworld's official release on the Sega Channel was not widely known at the time of the ROM's discovery, it was commonly understood to be a prototype, and it is currently unknown whether the ROM represents a prerelease version or the final Sega Channel release.
