1996 marked the end of support for the Sega Mega Drive in Japan, with only one game — Compile's remake of Madou Monogatari I — being released that year. However, the system continued to receive support and officially licensed games overseas. Very few of these games have seen release in Japan, and those that have were only released as part of compilations for newer consoles.
