While paused, press  START . The resulting menu will let you tweak various gameplay options, select a stage and view any of the endings.

Hidden endings

The Japanese version of Zero Wing features a total of 35 different endings. The first three endings can be acquired by beating each of the respective three difficulty settings; the remainder must be seen by beating the game again; upon every successful completion, the game will advance to the next ending. By reaching the final ending, the code for unlocking Zero Wing 's debug menu is revealed.

While many of the endings consist of out-of-character discussion between the villain CATS and the real-life player, the conversation will eventually devolve into what appears to be a Toaplan developer rambling about his favorite foods, singing lyrics from folk songs, and making bad Japanese puns.

	Numerous instances of Toaplan's mascot Pipiru dance the can-can.
	Ending 2
	A screen displaying game artwork, followed by a staff roll.
	Ending 3
	The player's spacecraft docks with its mothercraft and flies to a green planet, followed by Toaplan's mascot Pipiru winking at the camera.

	"You aren’t a member of the Federation government forces! Just who are you?! Want to join CATS?"
	Ending 5
	"C’mon, stop already. We’re busy, you know. There’s nothing left to see here."
	Ending 6
	"The gomashio at our base is delightful! You should stop by."

	"Gomashio is our doo-doo! If you put it on rice and mix it with an egg… it’s super-yummy!"

	"Sheesh. Let me go home already! I’m at the peak of my beauty, after all!"

	"Our CATS organization is sopping wet now, all because of you. You’d BETTER make this up to us! Kani, kani." A reference to an unknown Japanese comedy gag.
	Ending 16
	"CATS hereby issues you an order. “Sui-sui-sūdara-datta, sura-sura sui-sui-suī.” Go on, try to say it." A reference to Japanese singer and actor Hitoshi Ueki's 1961 comedy single Sūdara-bushi.

	"A cow or a horse would look oh-so-delicious if it exploded. Hmm, what to do…"

	"Oh my god! We never expected the Federation government forces to have someone like you! You made CATS sobby-sobby teary-weary! We can’t take this anymore!"

	"Thanks to your Federation assistance, our CATS organization is BASU-GASU-BAKUHATSU! How was that? Muhahahaha…" "Basu-gasu-bakuhatsu" is a Japanese tongue twister which translates to "bus gas explosion".

	"”Niwa niwa niwa niwatori ga iru. Momo mo sumomo mo momotarō.” Can you say it too?" "Niwa niwa niwa niwatori ga iru" is a Japanese tongue twister which translates to "there are two chickens in the yard", and "Momo mo sumomo mo momotarō" is a tongue twister which translates to "Peaches and plums are both Momotarō."

	"Ta-ratta-ratta-ratta! This is the CATS dance. What do you say? Won’t you dance with me?! Wahahahahaha!"

	"Lulu lives for 10,000 years! Oh, I can’t stand it! Don’t let your cold get you down! SHE! HER! HER!" Lulu references an old slogan for the Lulu brand of Japanese cough syrup, and "She Her She" is a common English phrase used to teach the language to Japanese speakers.

	"Is reading me really that fun?! You’re gonna make me cross, y’know! Just stop it already! Seriously, please!"

	"C’mon, it’s time we stop this. I’m hungry, tired, and sleepy. Unnngh… Please! Let me leave!"

	"Howdy, mister. If you quit now, I’ll introduce ya ta some nice gals. Whatcha say?!"

	"Acroooozzz the skyyyyy la la la… …beyooooond the… Hmm. I forgot the lyrics." CATS attempts to sing the lyrics to the 1963 Japanese television series Astro Boy.
	Ending 35
	"Input, S C u B Da A re West B C C West re West A Da, then S." A secret code for unlocking the game's debug mode, with West actually corresponding to East.
