Perform a soft reset when the Sega logo shows. After the game has rebooted, starting a new game will show your lives and credits at "??".
Level select
On the title screen, wait for the music to start playing, then before pressing START , press 
. There will be no confirmation, but "World" will now appear in the Option menu.
