Although the Master System version of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was not released in Japan, there is programming to display the Sega logo before the title screen if the game detects it is being played on a Japanese system. Additionally, the game's title will change to "Monster World II", which would later be used for the Game Gear port, which saw a Japanese release.

Game Gear version

Start as Hu-Man

Enter M0DE F0R 0000 000 as a password. This will have you start as Hu-Man (skipping the introduction sequence).

Disable door opening sound effect

Enter PLAY THE 0NGA KUN as a password. This will have you start as Piranha-Man and doors will no longer make a noise when opened.
