Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II is a special cartridge used for, as the name suggests, the second Blockbuster World Video Game Championships, held in branches of Blockbuster. It was built by Acclaim Entertainment for North American Sega Mega Drive units, and contains watered down versions of NBA Jam Tournament Edition and Judge Dredd.

History

Sonic the Hedgehog himself made an in-store appearance during the contest.

The second Blockbuster World Video Game Championships was organized in Spring 1995, splitting contestants into two categories - those aged under and including 13, and those aged 14 or above.[1] Registration was open between May 25 and June 25, 1995[1], with contestants able to pick between Sega's console or Nintendo's SNES (which had a different cartridge - one produced by Rare featuring Donkey Kong Country). Each Blockbuster store in North America ran the event between June 14 and July 9, producing "store champions" who would then progress to further round in August, set at GamePro's headquarters in San Francisco.[1] Despite the name it was not actually a "world championship".

Legacy

The contest's Mega Drive cartridge is exceptionally rare, not just because only a handful were produced, but because unlike its SNES counterpart which could be won by contestants, Acclaim's cartridge was ordered to be destroyed after use. Regardless, many cartridges have appeared on the internet, with the most recent being sold at auction for over $2000 USD.
