Chieko Aoki (青木 千恵子), also known by the aliases Chiemushi and Otegami Chie (lit. "Letter Chie") for her reputation of responding to questions from her team members during game development[1], is a Japanese game designer and former Sega of Japan director, writer, and story designer, most known for her work in producing much of the story, setting, and design for Sega's flagship Phantasy Star franchise.
Chieko Aoki is considered one of the "3 Sega Girls", alongwith Takako Kawaguchi and Miki Morimoto, all of them very well known among hardcore Japanese Sega fans in the 80's.[2]
Career
Aoki played an important role at Sega in the Sega Master System and early Mega Drive days, serving as an assistant on Phantasy Star and then taking on much larger duties as the director and scriptwriter for Phantasy Star II. Rieko Kodama, a key designer and artist for the series and later co-director of Phantasy Star IV, originally worked under Aoki.[3]
By 1993, Aoki had left Sega[4], though it is possible that she later returned to Sega as Chieko Nakamura, who is listed in the Special Thanks section of Phantasy Star IV's credits alongside other important series alumni like series director and scriptwriter Kotaro Hayashida.
