The Mega Drive emulator used in Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 has the sprite limit disabled. While this stops flickering when too many sprites are rendered on-screen, the are adverse effects, most notably Sonic being rendered above the banner on the title screen of Sonic the Hedgehog.
These quirks were likely not understood at the time, with many early Mega Drive emulators exhibiting this same issue.
Not fixed in any version.
