Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the Sega Game Gear is a versus fighting game based on the TV series of the same name.
Contents
Story
The evil intergalactic sorceress Rita Repulsa is plotting, from her castle on the moon, to take over Earth by letting her gang of monsters loose on the planet. She has also brainwashed the teenager Tommy Oliver into fighting for her side as the Green Ranger.
Five teenagers named Jason Lee Scott, Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Trini Kwan, and Billy Cranston have been chosen by the galactic wizard Zordon to fight her. They possess mystical Power Coins that allow them to transform into the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and special vehicles called Dinozords that can combine into the giant robot known as the Megazord.
Gameplay
The game is a fighting game. There is a single-player Story Game mode, where the player fights a series of matches against Rita Repulsa's minions. These matches consist of one round pitting a Power Ranger against a foe, usually with lesser minions also jumping in to challenge the player in a manner similar to a beat-'em-up (but the player only ever fights one opponent at a time). After defeating the foe once, Rita Repulsa uses her powers to grow the opponent to massive size, and the Rangers must battle the foe again in the Megazord, a giant fighting robot. Before every stage, the player chooses from any of the five Power Rangers to play. After defeating the Evil Green Ranger in battle, he joins the team and becomes selectable as well (which also adds the Dragonzord and Dragonzord Fighting Mode as choices in the second round of each match). There is also a one-player Vs Game and a two-player Link Game (using the Gear-to-Gear Cable), where players choose from sixteen characters to compete in one-on-one matches. Computer-controlled opponents are chosen at random in the Vs Mode.
Characters move with and , crouch with , and jump with . They punch with and kick with , and they perform fierce attacks with +. They can throw opponents with + when in close range. Characters can dash forward with (or if facing left) or backflip away with (or if facing left). They guard by holding the D-Pad in the direction away from the opponent. Each character has three special moves performed by pressing (or if facing left)) with , , or +.
The difficulty of computer-controlled opponents (Easy, Normal, or Hard) and the number of rounds in the versus modes (1, 3, or 5) can be changed in the options. An Extra Option menu is added after completing the game on Normal or Hard difficulty in the Story Game mode. This menu contains a stage select for the Story Game mode as well as a "Dream" setting for the Vs Game mode. The Dream Mode allows the player to choose the opponent in the Vs Game mode, including combinations of characters otherwise not allowed, such as mirror matches of the same character, Megazord versus Dragonzord, or human-sized characters versus Zords. This menu can also be enabled with a cheat code.
