Blast Wind (ブラストウインド) is a shoot-'em-up game released exclusively in Japan for the Sega Saturn in 1997.

Story

A nuclear shockwave has all but destroyed the entire population of Earth. The remaining humans on the planet were gathered aboard a ship called the Ark by a prophetic man named Noah. After the radiation dissipated, humankind emerged from the Ark and began building thriving civilizations.

However, the fledgling civilization came under attack by a culture called Gorn. Gorn was a culture consisting of the embodiment of machines and artificiality. During the nuclear winter, Gorn was sealed beneath the Earth's crust and emerged when the remaining humans came out of the Ark. Humanity must fight back against Gorn, using ancient weapons unearthed by the new civilization and two "Ultimate Destroyers" known as Kyo and Forn.

Gameplay

Players control either Kyo (Player 1) or Forn (Player 2)'s ships and fight off enemies while dodging attacks. Each ship has two different main shot types that can be switched between either through tapping/holding the fire button or two separate fire buttons (this can be changed in the options) and the weapons are powered up upon collecting P icons which will also give the ship a brief period of invincibility and a powerful horizontal lightning blast.

  • Kyo (Player 1)
    • Shot type 1 = Homing X-shot
    • Shot type 2 = Wave shot, follows the contours of some levels with walls
  • Forn (Player 2)
    • Shot type 1 = Aiming spread shot
    • Shot type 2 = Laser

There are also bombs, which can be stocked through B icons, and point bonus items such as medals and coins (collecting a certain amount of coins will drop a 1UP item).

Trivia

  • Apparently an arcade version of Blast Wind was to be made before the Saturn port titled Inazuma Saber, much like how Hyper Duel had an arcade version before the Saturn release. This arcade version was eventually shelved.
  • Gorn's motto is "World of Technology" which is also Technosoft's slogan, and "Gorn" is one letter off from the ORN Empire from the Thunder Force series.
