Mega Drive version
At the MK3 logo in the introduction sequence, press . The announcer will say "Smoke" and the background will go red, signalling the code has worked.
On the main menu, press . This will let you choose which finishing moves the computer will use, whether Smoke or the bosses are on or off, and allow you to play the Galaga-esque mini-game.
On the main menu, press to access a "cheats" option. This screen offers a sound test, the ability to adjust the how many continues/credits you have, and see all the (normal) character biographies.
Press +++ START on the main menu.
Kombat Kodes
Mortal Kombat 3 introduced to the series the concept of "Kombat Kodes". As a two-player versus match is about to begin, six boxes showing icons at the bottom of the screen can be manipulated by both players. The first three boxes are cycled through by tapping player one's , and buttons, respectively, and the second three by the second player.
There are 10 digits, usually referred to in-guides as 0-9 (e.g. to get the third icon, tap the button twice):
