Sega Magazin called later Sega Magazin Mix was a quarterly magazine devoted to Sega video game consoles in Turkey. At the beginning it was issued monthly but later SMM was released once in three months unlike other gaming magazines released in Turkey or rest of the world. Console gaming was very recently picking up in Turkey in the years the magazine was released and Sega was becoming a favourite among Turkish gamers.
64'LER
The magazine was launched in December 1991 and was a supplement to another magazine called 64'LER. The only thing that is known about the content is that there were reviews on Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear. A total of four issues appeared in addition to the issues 45 to 48 of 64'LER, and the last one was released in March 1992. In 64'LER # 52 which was released in July 1992 and was the last issue of the 64'LER, it was made clear that the journal was now independent.[1]
Independent
Style
Magazine's design was similar to most other gaming magazines. In addition to ads, previews and the news sections, most attention was given to the reviews and walkthroughs. Tips section covered the games briefly and provided hints regarding the games' trouble spots.
Sonic (Master System Version) was the first game received a walkthrough in the first issue. Asterix, which was covered in both 3th and 4th issues was the longest guide in the magazine's short history, with nearly 30 pages were devoted to it.
Magazine also had a science-fiction comic called EXCROM which lasted only for two issues and later dropped due to lack of interest from readers.
Each issue had at least one English game review to encourage the readers to brush up their English skills.
Another section was called "Game Doctor" which was a typical Q&A section for the readers.
Name of the authors were never given which led to the speculation that the articles were actually taken from other magazines from foreign countries and simply translated to Turkish but this was never proven.
Walkthroughs
Magazine was famous (or infamous, depending on the point of view) for spending a great number of pages for game walkthroughs. This is full list of games SMM released guides for.
Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System) : 1st Issue, 6 pages
Castle of Illusion, Starring Mickey Mouse (Master System) : 1st Issue, 4 Pages
Golden Axe (Master System) : 1st Issue, 2 pages
Shinobi (Master System) : 2nd Issue, 8 pages
Deep Duck Trouble, Starring Donald Duck (Master System) : 2nd Issue, 6 pages
Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System) : 3rd Issue, 9 pages
Ninja Gaiden (Game Gear) : 3rd Issue, 10 pages
Asterix (Master System) : 3rd and 4th Issues, 24 pages
Shadow Dancer (Mega Drive) : 4th Issue, 7 pages
End
Magazine's rather short life ended abruptly in late 1993 when the 5th issue which was supposedly to be released October 1993 simply did not appear in shelves for months. Attempts from readers to reach magazine's HQ (It was owned by Metin Textiles Company) resulted in failure and fans eventually gave up hope.
Truth behind the magazine's demise was never explained and this eventually resulted in several conspiracy theories.
