Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie for the Sega Game Gear is a versus fighting game based on the 1995 film spin-off from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television show.
Contents
Story
A giant purple egg has been unearthed at a construction site. Lord Zedd, Rita Repulsa, and their henchmen arrive at the construction site and crack open the egg, releasing Ivan Ooze, a morphological being who ruled Earth 6,000 years ago before he was lured into a hyper-lock chamber and buried deep underground by Zordon and a group of young warriors. Ivan Ooze attacks the Command Center, incapacitating Zordon and robbing the Rangers of their powers. Zordon's assistant Alpha 5 sends the Rangers to the distant planet Phaedos to obtain the Great Power and save Zordon.
Gameplay
The game is an updated version of the earlier Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fighting game for the Game Gear, with new moves and characters from the movie. There is a single-player Story Game mode. The first three matches are based on episodes of the television series and play similarly to the first game. A Power Ranger fights a foe, with Putty Patrols sometimes jumping in to challenge the player like a beat-'em-up (but the player only ever fights one opponent at a time). After defeating the foe once, Lord Zedd uses his powers to grow the opponent to massive size, and the Rangers must battle the foe again in the Megazord, a giant fighting robot. The latter three matches, which roughly follow the plot of the movie, diverge from this style and consist of matches solely fought as either a Ranger or a Zord. Before every stage, except the stages fought solely in a Zord, the player chooses from any of the six Power Rangers to play. There is also a one-player Vs Game and a two-player Link Game (using the Gear-to-Gear Cable), where players choose from fifteen characters to compete in one-on-one matches. Computer-controlled opponents are chosen at random in the Vs Mode.
Characters move with and , crouch with , and jump with . They punch with and kick with , and they fierce attacks with +. They can throw opponents with + when in close range. Characters can dash forward with (or if facing left) or backflip away with (or if facing left). They guard by holding the D-Pad in the direction away from the opponent. Each character has three special moves performed by pressing (or if facing left) with , , or +. There is also a lightning icon that brightens as the player attacks the opponent. When the icon is filled, it starts to flash, which indicates that a high-damage "super special move" can be performed with + (or + if facing left).
The difficulty of computer-controlled opponents (Easy, Normal, or Hard) and the number of rounds in the versus modes (1, 3, or 5) can be changed in the options. An Extra Option menu is added after completing the game on Normal or Hard difficulty in the Story Game mode. This menu contains a stage select for the Story Game mode as well as a "Dream" setting for the Vs Game mode. The Dream Mode allows the player to choose the opponent in the Vs Game mode, including combinations of characters otherwise not allowed, such as mirror matches of the same character or human-sized characters versus Zords. This menu can also be enabled with a cheat code.
