Ninja Gaiden for the Sega Mega Drive is one of three Ninja Gaiden games to be published by Sega with license from Tecmo. However, whereas the Master System and Game Gear games were released by the company, the Mega Drive version was cancelled during development. Had it been released, the game would have reached the public in 1992.
The Mega Drive Ninja Gaiden takes the series back to its beat-'em-up roots, rather than opting for a frantic platform style of gameplay seen in other Ninja Gaiden games of this era. Though the title claims the game was "reprogramed", it is in fact a brand new release, seemingly inspired by Streets of Rage.

As of 2011 no clean dumps of the ROM exist, only bad dumps and ROMs containing hacked headers. It is still fully playable in most emulators, however.
