Mallet Legend is an unlicensed action game for the Sega Mega Drive developed by AV artisan and published by Realtec in 1993. In the US it is known as Whac-a-Critter or Mallet Legend's Whac-a-Critter depending on the source. It is one of the more interesting unlicensed titles for the system, as it relies on a similarly unlicensed accessory, the Smash Controller, released by Innovation in the US.
In Taiwan, both the Smash controller and game cartridge were bundled together, however in the US the two were sold separately.

Gameplay
The game is a Whac-A-Mole clone — simply hit the button on the controller corresponding to the hole where a critter pops up before it disappears.
Hitting the princess will lower the percentage score, and hitting the 3 bombs that appear in each round makes everything explode. After getting a good score at the end of the round (55% in the first round, 65% in the 2nd, 75% in the 3rd, 80% in the 4th), you get a much harder bonus round as a "boss battle" before moving on to the next round. The 5th and last round is won by getting an 80% score.
The game can be played with a normal joypad, using the arrows to select one of the 8 peripheral holes to whack, or letting it rest to target the centre hole, and using to activate the mallet.
