PCM Driver
One of the unusual quirks of the Mega Drive version of After Burner II is its custom PCM driver. While most Mega Drive games use the YM2612's built-in programmable DAC, After Burner II opts to use the PSG in the Mega Drive as a sample chip. This is done by setting the PSG's channels to supersonic frequencies, and directly manipulating the volume registers. The game can play three 4-bit PCM samples at once, with one channel reserved for drums.
The drawback of this feature is the samples are very quiet, necessitating the music being designed around the samples and in turn, the YM2612's low volume distortion. When Sega fixed the YM2612's volume bug on later Mega Drive consoles, the game sounds too quiet with instruments being missing.
No other game (or Mega Drive software, for that matter) uses the PSG in this manner. In fact, the only games that use this technique are Master System and Game Gear games, namely Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars.[1]
