By default, The Pirates of Dark Water forces you to read copyright info and see Sunsoft and Iguana Entertainment logos before the introduction begins. However, if the console is reset as soon as the Sega logo appears, pressing START when the logo appears again will skip straight to the introduction.
This trick only works with consoles with a real (soft) reset button.
Level select
On the Iguana Entertainment logo screen, press 
. If performed correctly, the background should turn blue. Then on the title screen, press +++ START for a level select.
