Mania difficulty

On the title screen press . This should turn the logo gold and add "Mania" to the difficulty options.

Stage select

When the text STAGE 1 START appears, press . The screen now functions as a stage select. This changes the value in memory address 00FFBE98.

Add extra life

Pause the game and press and you will be granted an extra life. This can be done as many times you want.

Hidden menu

Pause the game and press . This will let you change the state of your ship, change the stage and is another means of enabling mania difficulty.

If the cheat code text is taken letter by letter (B A C A D A C A R A B U R U B U R U D A), it appears to form a sentence in Japanese, "馬鹿だからブルブルだ" (baka da kara buruburu da), which roughly translates to "I'm an idiot so I'm trembling [in fear]."

Control letters when entering high score

The pseudo-3D letters when entering a high score can be changed by holding  START  and using the d-pad. and will rotate characters, while and will zoom in and out.
