Mega Drive version
Sound test
On the title screen, press 
. A sound will signal the code has been entered correctly, and a "sound test" option will appear in the options menu[1].
This feature can be unlocked legitimately by beating the game on any difficulty.
Game Gear version
Sega logo ™ symbol
While not released outside Japan, code exists to add the ™ symbol to the introductory Sega logo if the game detects it is being played on a Western system.
Error screen
Most Game Gear games that support the Gear-to-Gear Cable display a "CHECK CARTRIDGE" error when the cable is tampered with during a 2-player game. Puyo Puyo, and by extension Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, displays a unique error screen with graphics not seen anywhere else in the game. To view it in an emulator, set memory address D401 to any value higher than 3 in a memory editor while in the main menu, then press START . After a few seconds, the game will reset itself.

Virtual Console versions
Wii
The packages for both Arcade and Mega Drive versions of Puyo Puyo on Wii Virtual Console includes data for different names if installed on other systems other than a Japanese Wii system. The Arcade version displays the Puyo Pop name, while the Mega Drive version displays Dr. Robotnik as a title. The reverse also applies for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which displays ぷよぷよ as its Japanese title if it is installed on a Japanese Wii system.
Nintendo 3DS
Installing Puyo Puyo on a Nintendo 3DS system other than Japanese displays the Virtual Console banner used for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The reverse also applies for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine if it is installed in a Japanese Nintendo 3DS system.
Nintendo Switch Online version
Puyo Puyo and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine shares the same internal product code (M-5030), despite only one of them being available in both regional variants of the Sega Mega Drive - Nintendo Switch Online app.
