Arcade Archives Wonder Boy (アーケードアーカイブス ワンダーボーイ) is a re-release of Wonder Boy for the PlayStation 4, published by Hamster. It is the sixth title in the Arcade Archives series.
Originally, Arcade Archives Wonder Boy was released by permission of Westone Bit Entertainment, but without permission of Sega, who had the name rights along other elements. All mentions of Sega, including its logo, were removed. After Westone declared bankruptcy months after, it is unknown who was the licensor until 2018, where Hamster credited LAT over Westone. In 2019, Hamster added Sega (at the time, Sega Games) as a licensor, alongside LAT. Mentions of Sega were not added back to the game, however.
Alongside this oddity, as of November 2024, Arcade Archives Wonder Boy is the only title in the Arcade Archives series exclusive to the PlayStation 4, being unavailable on the Nintendo Switch. Chances are that licensing hurdles between Sega and LAT might be the reason about that re-release not happening. It is also exclusive to Japan, alongside Arcade Archives Marvel Land and Arcade Archives F/A.
After its release, Wonder Boy Monster Land was also cogitated to be re-released by Hamster and set to be released by somewhere around 2014[2], but it was likely cancelled following Westone's bankruptcy (although it was later released on the PlayStation 4 through Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection).
