Asuka 120% Limited Burning Fest. Limited (あすか120%リミテッド BURNING Fest. LIMITED) is fighting game developed by Fill in Cafe and published by ASK Kodansha for the Sega Saturn. The Asuka 120% series was influential on anime fighting games such as the Guilty Gear and Melty Blood series.
The exclusive Ryouran Academy for Girls (繚乱女学院) holds an annual martial arts tournament called the Mega Fight Tournament (メガファイト・トーナメント) in which all of the school's clubs compete to win an increased budget. After repeated poor performances at previous tournaments, the Chemistry Club President, Tetsuko Ougigaya, scouts and trains Asuka Honda to become this year's winner. Asuka must defeat the members of several school clubs in order to succeed.
Gameplay
Character select
The game is a 2D fighting game set in an all-girls Japanese high school. There are eleven playable characters representing different school clubs, each vying to win the Mega Fight Tournament and secure a larger budget for her club. Characters fight using techniques unique to her club rather than with traditional fighting techniques. Matches are fought to the best of three rounds, and each round is timed. Each character has a health gauge that goes down as she takes damage from attacks, with the round ending in defeat for a character when she loses all of her health or if time runs out and the character has less health than the opponent.
Characters move with and and crouch with . They backstep or run with or . Running can be interrupted by holding in the opposite direction or by attacking, and characters can run to the other side of the opponent. They jump with , , or , double-jump by jumping again in midair, or high jump by pressing quickly. Jumps and high jumps can be done out of a run. Characters can execute a light attack by pressing or a hard attack by pressing . Light attacks are fast but do little damage, while hard attacks are strong but slow. Attacks vary depending on whether the character is standing, crouching, or jumping, and characters also have several command normals that can be done by pairing a direction with an attack button and special moves that are performed with different button combinations.
Characters guard automatically or by holding the D-Pad away from the opponent while the opponent is attacking. Guarding completely mitigates the damage from normal moves, but special moves still do a small amount of damage. Alternatively, characters can interrupt an opponent's attack and counterattack by pressing + (or ) when the opponent is attacking. Guarding can be interrupted by dashing, running, high jumping, or counterattacking (and a run that interrupts a dash can itself be interrupted by an attack). Guarding and counterattacking can both be done while standing, crouching, or jumping. Some attacks can only be guarded while standing (such as overheads and jumping attacks) or crouching (such as sweeps). If characters attack each other at the same time, the two attacks "clash" and repel each other, doing no damage. A clash can be canceled into a special move that cannot be blocked if done quickly enough. Projectile attacks can be neutralized by hitting them.
Characters can throw each other by holding or when next to an opponent and pressing . Throws can be done while standing or while in midair (against an airborne opponent) and cannot be blocked. A character can escape from a throw by likewise holding or and pressing during the throw or quickly recover from a knockdown by pressing after hitting the ground. Getting hit in midair always results in a knockdown. Characters become dizzy after taking too many attacks in a short time, but they can recover more quickly by moving the D-Pad and pressing the attack buttons rapidly.
Each character has a "Burning Gauge" that increases as she lands attacks or when she is attacked (besides throws). Performing a counterattack costs a small amount of the gauge (but counterattacks can still be done when the gauge is empty). When the gauge reaches 100%, the character begins to glow and can perform a super move called a Saishuu Ougi (最終奥義), which empties the gauge. The gauge can increase further, up to 120%, if not spent, which causes the character to enter "Burning Mode" and begin to flash. This state only lasts a short time, during which the character's attacks do more damage and she can perform unlimited super moves until the gauge drains.
Modes
There are the following modes:
Story Mode: The single-player story mode. The player chooses any character and fights nine other opponents in a predetermined order depending on the selected character. Every battle is preceded and followed by dialogue between the characters. The game ends if the player loses a match, but it can be continued an unlimited number of times. If the player wins every match without using a continue, there is a tenth match against a final boss (whose identity varies depending on the selected character).
Vs Mode: Plays a single match between any two characters. Vs User plays against another human player, Vs Com plays against a computer player, and Vs Watch watches a match between two computer players. The game keeps track of the wins, losses, and the biggest rush combo for each player with each character and saves them to the console's internal memory, which can be viewed under Results.
Ranking Mode: A single-player survival mode. The player chooses any character and fights the other ten playable characters in a random order, then Tetsuko, Genichirou, and a final mirror match against the selected character. Each match is only a single round, and the player's character only recovers a partial amount of health after each match. The game ends if the player loses a match and cannot be continued.
There are six difficulty levels for computer opponents and eight game speeds (displayed as three stars, with small stars counting for one level and big stars counting for two levels). Players can also decide the time limit (30, 60, or 80 seconds or no limit) and the number of rounds needed to win a match (1 or 2). Pressing or on the Config Mode screen accesses additional screens of options, including the ability to set a handicap in versus games (between 0 and 7), set guarding for each player (auto, manual, or no guarding), and set the Burning Gauge for each player (start full or normal).
