Story
Sometimes in 1990s, most civilization is destroyed by nuclear war, transforming the world into a desert wasteland where the strong prey on the weak.
Kenshiro (ケンシロウ) is the rightful successor of an ancient art of assassination called "The Fist of the North Star" (北斗神拳), which trains its practitioners to kill from within an opponent's body through the use of hidden meridian points. To restore peace to the land, Kenshiro must travel to the Land of Asura (修羅の国) and defeat the three Supreme Leaders (羅将), who are also masters of the Fist of the North Star: Kaioh (カイオウ), Hyoh (ヒョウ), and Han (ハン).
Gameplay
Hokuto no Ken: Shin Seikimatsu Kyuuseishu Densetsu is a single-plane beat-'em-up that plays similarly to its predecessor Hokuto no Ken. The player takes control of the warrior Kenshiro. The game is divided into four chapters, each featuring several levels. After completing a level, the player is shown a map with Kenshiro's current location and the paths he can take. Most of the levels are linear side-scrolling segments where Kenshiro simply walks from one to side to the other while fighting every enemy who gets in the way. Other levels are dungeon mazes in which the player must figure out the correct path to the goal while avoiding traps. Some areas are one-on-one encounters with bosses. The player must sometime complete levels in a certain order in order to finish a chapter. Not all of the levels are mandatory, but some of them contain allies who increase Kenshiro's offensive or defensive strength or replenish his health.
Kenshiro walks with and and crouches with . He fights against his enemies by punching with and kicking with . Attacks can deflect projectiles such as knives and other objects such as boulders. He jumps with and jumps farther with +. In the dungeons, he can enter doorways with . Kenshiro can attack while standing, jumping, and crouching. Kenshiro has a power-up meter that gradually fills as he defeats enemies. When the meter reaches a certain point, Kenshiro transforms into a super-powered state, allowing him to perform rapid punches and kicks for the rest of the chapter.
Kenshiro has a life gauge that depletes as he takes damage from foes. If he loses all of his life, the game ends; there are no extra lives or continues. Most levels, with the exception of boss battles and maze stages, have a time limit. Instead of killing Kenshiro immediately when it reaches zero, it instead gradually drains his life gauge until the player completes the level.
